Being born in America is like being kidnapped and sold into slavery. Being born again in Stockholm is same same, only different.

Taking hostages is so pre-September 11. I have known a great many troubles in my life, most of which never happened. I still have some gamble in me—some sympathy for the devil.

After all, as Nietzsche warns, be careful when casting out your devil, lest you cast out the best thing about you.

Forget the suicidal winters and the reputation for building the safest cars on Earth. Stockholm has bike paths everywhere. It is easy to get around the islands that make up the city.

Forget the suicidal winters and the reputation for building the safest cars on Earth. SAAB and Volvo can take a back seat. Stockholm belongs to the bicycle.

Stockholm is a city made of islands, bridges, water, and enough bike paths to make movement feel like part of the architecture.

It is easy to get around the islands that make up the city. The bicycle changes the scale of the place. Streets become corridors, bridges become transitions, and the waterfront turns into a continuous route rather than a collection of disconnected views.

Even in the rain, downtown Stockholm keeps moving. The weather does not cancel the city. It simply becomes part of the ride.

The safest way to understand Stockholm may be on two wheels: close enough to the street to feel the city, fast enough to cross its islands before the weather changes again.

The bicycle did not merely help me see Stockholm. It revealed how the city had been designed to move.
