What are you on? I'm on my bike again — West Sussex lockdown field image

The seed of the philosophy We Are All Time Millionaires

Lockdown took away movement, routine and certainty — then quietly handed back the one thing modern life was always claiming to lack: time. The question changed from “Where can we go?” to “What will we do with the hours we suddenly own?”

Original caption: “What are you on? I’m on my bike again.”

The Pause

When time stopped being scarce

“We have to count our blessings that we are sequestered and have free time, something we always commodify as not HAVING ENOUGH of... We are all Time Millionaires.”

That sentence is the seed. Not the finished philosophy. Not yet the book. It is the first inversion: what if wealth is not only what we accumulate, but the amount of life we can actually inhabit?

The pandemic created the idea by force. Calendars emptied. Commuting vanished. Familiar routines were suspended. Time arrived in bulk — and suddenly abundance itself became a problem to solve.

The first Time Millionaire question was not “How do I get more time?” It was “Now that I have it, what is it for?”

The Original Operating System

Move. Learn. Read. Sing. Just be.

The source does not prescribe productivity for productivity’s sake. Its answer to confinement is movement and thoughtful nudges: exercise, learn guitar, learn a foreign language, sing, read — and, crucially, just be.

That final phrase matters. The idea is already moving beyond conventional time management. The goal is not squeezing more output from an hour. It is recovering ownership of the hour.

Seed 01 · Abundance Free time is a form of wealth

The original scarcity story — “I never have enough time” — is interrupted by forced abundance.

Seed 02 · Agency Choose what the hour becomes

Movement, learning and creativity convert passive waiting into deliberate living.

Seed 03 · Presence Being counts

“Just be” is the earliest version of the later move from productivity toward presence.

Mindfulness Before the Brand

Sitting still was part of the discovery

The post opens with Pascal’s challenge about our inability to sit quietly alone, then turns to Full Catastrophe Living and Jon Kabat-Zinn’s language of mindfulness.

That matters to the later Time Millionaire philosophy because it introduces a distinction that becomes essential: having time and experiencing time are not the same thing. An hour consumed by anxiety is technically free but not necessarily felt as wealth.

The bike rides through West Sussex become the counterweight. Fresh air. Movement. Attention. Time becomes embodied rather than merely available.

From Seed to Book

The idea grows up

The later work keeps the March 2020 insight but changes its scale: from emergency free time to a philosophy of deliberate prosperity.

2020

The seed — “We are all Time Millionaires”

Time scarcity flips into time abundance. The first practical uses are movement, learning, creativity and being.

Fair Isle

The experiment — natural time replaces calendar time

Weather, tide, food, walking, neighbourliness and remoteness turn the idea into lived experience rather than lockdown theory.

Book

The doctrine — moments over possessions

The mature philosophy becomes freedom over accumulation, autonomy over authority, flexibility over rigidity, meaning over money and presence over productivity.

Who Wants to Be a Time Millionaire?

This is the conceptual birth scene. The later book’s philosophy of time wealth is already present in embryonic form: free time as abundance, agency over how it is spent, and presence as something valuable in itself.

March 2020 supplies the question. Fair Isle later supplies the laboratory. The pandemic asks what recovered time is for; island life answers with weather, attention, walking, work, food, neighbourliness and deliberate living.

What are you on? I'm on my bike again

“All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”

― Blaise Pascal, Pensées

Full Catastrophe Living is a manual about using mindfullness to cope with , well, the exact situation we find ourselves in globally, THIS INTERNATIONAL PANDEMIC.

It is indeed a radical act of love just to sit down and be quiet for a time by yourself. Jon Kabat-Zinn".

Quarantine (Italian quaranta giorni 40 days) a Venitian seafarers practice of ships returning from strange lands--- It began during the 14th century in an effort to protect coastal cities from plague epidemics. Ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to sit at anchor for 40 days before landing.

We have no choice but to sit alone quietly in our homes.... yet here in West Sussex, the National Health Service  encourages all of us to get a bit of fresh air and exercise. What a difference this has made.

Work at home is a nice notion, if you happen to have a  job that doesn't require you to be there. Doctors  and nurses are working, Waiters  and dishwashers are not---but everyone is getting sick from the COVID19 pandemic.

The IN to our Sane during 'lockdowns'and physical distancing will be movement, and thoughtful nudges to get things done----exercise, learn guitar, a foreign language, sing, read, just be.

Math is hard, but we have to count our blessings thatw e are sequstered and have to have free time, something we always comidify as not HAVING ENOUGH of...We are all Time Millionaires.

The Elixir

You do not become time-rich by owning more hours. You become time-rich by owning your relationship with them.

March 2020 supplied the accidental fortune: empty time. Fair Isle later supplied the practice. The book supplied the language. But the first deposit was already here — “We are all Time Millionaires.”
