The Boulders Colony
π© Those cute tuxedo-like birds are alive and well! π©
African Penguins living at the tip of South Africa in a place called Boulder Beach.
These charming birds in their formal attire have made this pristine coastline their home,
creating one of the world's most accessible penguin colonies.
Swimming Among Penguins
Boulders still remains the only place in the world where one can actually swim amongst
the penguins as they have continued to invade more beaches. This unique experience allows
visitors to share the ocean with these incredible birds in their natural habitat.
Jack Ass Penguins
π They are sometimes referred to as "Jack Ass" Penguins because they make "hie-hΓ΄" in Afrikaans! π
Although Simon's Town is very proud of its penguins, nearby residents suffer badly as the birds
invade their gardens, destroy the undergrowth and are generally very noisy and messy. The area
has now been taken over by Cape Peninsula National Park, with penguins corralled from wandering
inland by fences and boardwalks.
π The "Jack Ass" Penguins
These African Penguins earned their nickname from their distinctive braying call that sounds like
"hie-hΓ΄" in Afrikaans. While charming to visitors, they're quite the characters - invading gardens,
making noise, and creating chaos wherever they waddle!
