Foreign LandsFiji Islands — Fee-Gee

Coming home to a place I’ve never been before. It’s Fee-Gee—Fiji.

You can’t get any further away before you start coming back.

John Denver visited this island today—“Sunshine on My Shoulders.”

Imagine sailing across the blue waters of the South Pacific, passing idyllic islands teeming with exotic fish and majestic coral reefs. Oh, wait—I don’t have to use my imagination, because what you see is what you get.

Foreign Lands · The Operating Belief You can’t get any further away before you start coming back. The horizon changes first. Then the meaning of home changes with it.

Field Note · Country Roads

OMG, I’m a Country Boy

The first image becomes the threshold: a familiar song, an unfamiliar island, and a landscape that makes the joke true.

Coming home to a place I’ve never been before. It’s Fee-Gee—Fiji.

The country-road soundtrack lands differently in the South Pacific. The island is foreign, but the feeling is immediate.

Navigation Note · Date Line

An Exquisite Garland of Islands

East of the International Date Line, welcome arrives as a word, a smile, and a bottle carrying the island’s name.

To the east of the International Date Line lies an exquisite garland of islands known as Fiji. Dignified, smiling people bid you “bula,” or welcome, to their unspoiled homeland and give you bottles of water called Fiji, bottled at the “source.”

Coming home to a place I’ve never been before.

Foreign lands do not always make home feel farther away. Sometimes they reveal what home was trying to mean.
