The random-est (and most fascinating) place I've ever been this year is Dubai-man-made islands, indoor ski park,tallest skyscraper in the world, Burj Kalifia the coolest hotel Burj Arab, the biggest malls on the planet..Ok Do I have your attention....

See links;

Then there is The Sand

The sacred animal and ship of the desert, Camels,juxtaposed by the SUV's going in opposite directions seems so poetic and symbolic as the past and the future meet in the all encompassing Then and Now in harmony.

The desert seems empty but hides many possibilities, I am reminded of Namibia and Dune 7

The roads of life have twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same.When I see the symbolic meaning of camels, the sacred animal and ship of the desert, I see journey(ing) and transport(ing) . Their essence is of long-distance travel. It's no secret the camel can endure days in scorching hot deserts while transporting precious cargo and whole tribes across great distances.

Thanks to Kevin Dennis and Julie Robinson for this excellent photo of the camels!(above)

Falconry is an age-old UAE heritage sport that existed in the country for thousands of years

“I have spent weeks in the desert, forgetting to look at the moon, he says, as a married man may spend days never looking into the face of his wife. These are not sins of omission but signs of pre-occupation.”

An Old Salt

Dubai Off Shore Sailing Club w/ Captain Craig and Sarah

The Burj Hotel in the background, built to resemble the sail of a dhow.or yacht's sail. It is an iconic structure, designed to symbolize Dubai's urban transformation

I'm not going to use  hyperbole to  attempt to answer the question
of what Dubai signifies- it just is a cool place to visit, and certainly a welcome change from KSA.  Money doesn't talk here, it shouts- it is the jewel of the arab world.

Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort in the Middle East-Awesome
