Mission Brief

After Monday and Tuesday, all that was left in Cabo was W T F, eh?

Last November I was in Baja, Mexico. A year later the memory still arrives like intelligence from another life: sun-struck, salt-stained, and slightly unbelievable.

The official explanation was that I was travelling. The operational truth was more complicated. I was testing a theory: that a person could denounce the cult of permanence, convert money back into time, and exchange potential income for the freedom to spend his days as he wished.

Code Phrase

“I’m gonna make him an offer…”

Ed Reif 3.0 translation: The sea made me an offer: surrender predictability and receive the world. I accepted before anyone could explain why it was impractical.

Cover Identity

The Importance of Being Ernest

The Public Persona

Ernest Hemingway understood that a life of adventure eventually becomes inseparable from the story told about it. The marlin, the boat, the harbour, the boxing, the cafés: life and legend operating under the same passport.

The Private Operation

I was doing something similar at sea, only with less explanation. Cabo, Cozumel and Key West became scenes in a long-form memoir written in ports, ship corridors, stolen afternoons and departures.

“That is what we are supposed to do when we are at our best — make it all up — but make it up so truly that later it will happen that way.”

Operational Meaning

Converting Money Back Into Time

If you are what you eat, then I am a flaky pastry. I became more efficient by stopping the things I no longer liked doing. I stopped asking only what the world needed and began asking what made me come alive.

Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.

Fish are the last to know they are in the ocean. People in a trance are the last to know they are in one. When I felt stuck in the grind and daily trivialities, movement restored perspective: a run, a walk, a bike ride, a surfboard, a gangway opening into a foreign port.

Field Principle

To control your cow, give it a bigger pasture.

Freedom was not the absence of structure. It was a larger field of movement.

Navigation Rule

Balance is beautiful.

It is very American to make things happen. There is also wisdom in allowing things to happen. Like riding a bicycle, keeping balance requires movement.

Declassified Account

Cruising Is the Gateway Drug to Paradise

Travelling by sea gives me the sense of inhabiting my own life. I do not create the Caribbean blue ocean or the white powder beaches. They are gifts. What I write comes out of gratitude for being there.

There are seven days in the week, and someday is not one of them. I am glad I am sailing today.

Last month I was the hyper-organised intentional traveller, complete with checklists, sunscreen and designated travel clothes. Now I am the light traveller: shoestring budget, shirt on my back, less equipment, more world. This version feels better.

Code Phrase

“Don’t ask me about my business, Kay.”

Ed Reif 3.0 translation: Do not ask how the itinerary works, why the next port already feels familiar, or why I seem more at home while leaving. The truth was better protected by understatement.

Closing Transmission

I was not escaping life. I was collecting worlds.

The photographs are the surveillance record. The blog is the open archive. The ships were both transport and cover. The mission was to live so widely that the truth would sound fictional.
