Reprint from 2018 World Cruise Queen Mary 2 / Two Lives at Sea / 2016–2018 The Long Way Home Passengers This Time In 2018, while I waited for the security clearance that would take me to work in Afghanistan, Sarah and I boarded Queen Mary 2 in Hong Kong. After years shaped by working at sea, we crossed to Southampton as passengers this time. See Full Image Show Text The Unexpected Interval Between the Crew Door and the Passenger Gangway My next destination was supposed to be Afghanistan. First, the security clearance had to catch up with the assignment. Bureaucratic time opened an ocean-sized interval, and Sarah and I stepped into it. We joined Queen Mary 2 in Hong Kong and sailed west to Southampton. The geography was spectacular, but the deeper story was the change in role: after the working-at-sea years, the ship was no longer a workplace we helped operate. For once, it carried us. ...
