Kona Joe-It's Not A Drug. It's A Vitamin.
Hawaii Field Notes · 2007
Kona Joe—It’s Not a Drug. It’s a Vitamin.
Coffee was the pretext. Attention was the real stimulant. Kona became a field lesson in how taste, place, people, and curiosity can turn an ordinary cup into a life remembered.
The original Hawaii archive looked like a travel diary. Seen from the future, it was already becoming a philosophy: the best things in life were not things, attention was a form of wealth, and paradise worked best when you stopped trying to purchase it.
🌺 Welcome to Paradise... Your Wallet Won't Be

Touchdown in Maui with mainland money and mainland expectations. The visitor industry was ready to make an "Aloha Graduate" out of this unknown kid from Los Angeles. The meat grinder was warming up.
👮♂️ Hawaii 5-OMFG Reality

No monster waves until winter, but I did see Steve and Dano in Maui - complete with 4-year varsity letters, Portuguese last names, and healed acne scars, handing out speeding tickets. Bad cops. No donuts. The TV show lied!
💸 The $85 Aloha Shirt Massacre

Hit up Hilo Hatties - the Hamburger Helper for mainland haole scum! Dropped $85 on a loud aloha shirt. It's just tuition for an Aloha graduate, an edjamacated expense in a bowl of stupid. When the credit card bill comes, they call it the afterlife. Lahaina. Even a caveman can do it.
🏪 Front Street Meat Grinder

Ocean FRONT Street - THE street on Maui's west coast. The usual overpriced suspects: Hard Rock Cafe, ABC Stores (Aloha Bring Cash), Starbucks, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Cheezy Burger in Paradise. Like TJ or some Mexican border town, but with better views. I love the smell of fractional real estate time shares in full bloom in the morning.
🎵 Izzy's Anti-Elevator Music

Don Ho was M.I.A., but Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" filled the air. The post-humorous soundtrack to paradise - anti-elevator muzac that actually meant something. The real vibe of the islands echoing through Lahaina's streets.
🤙 Chin-Checked by Paradise
Locals engage me with patronizing "Howz it's" and "Sup Brah" surfer speak while thinking "pu'insai" - getting screwed out of hard-earned money. I'm just a temporary colonist with an expiration date stamped on my forehead.
🌈 Fantabulous Human Connections
The best things in Hawaiian life aren't things, they're people. Meeting a creamy blend of the fantastic and fabulous: Lisa, Cheryl, Lauren, Chris, Nadine, Sherry, Martin, Javier, Rick, Matt, Zac, Keith, Kyle, the Pauls, Johanna, David S. and others beyond belief.
🔥 Honolulu Duct Tape Sighting!

"There are some days when I think I'm going to die from an overdose of satisfaction. God made the world, but it's held together with duct tape." Stuck in afternoon traffic at Aloha Towers when Adolfus The Beast (my SAAB 900) started smoking. Battery on fire, cables melting! Japanese tourists screaming "Abunai!" (Danger!)
🚔 Steve & Danno Strike Again

Honolulu Fire and Police arrived instantly - complete with 4-year varsity letters, Portuguese last names and healed acne scars! Expected Steve and Danno but Writer's Guild strike prevented their appearance. HPD declared the land yacht "unsafe at any speed" and needed towing. I had other plans...
🛠️ Island Style Emergency Repair

Auto meat grinder chop shops wanted "Ohana family prices" - never! Found it easier to speak Hawaiian since I only know four words. One of them: Da Kine! - the all-purpose DIY solution. The Hamburger Helper for mainland haole scum. Why pay too much when you have the ultimate power tool?
🚢 Shoveling Sunshine on SS Constitution

From tourist to deck hand on American Hawaii Cruises! Seven-day circuit: Aloha Towers → Kauai → Maui (Lahaina & Kahului) → Hilo → Kona. The definition of ecstasy is not doing your ordinary ho-hum existence. Shoveling sunshine in Hawaii beats a day at the office!
☕ Starbucks Cosmic Influence

Big Island Starbucks with friends cream and sugar. American coffee is "dirty water," instant takes too long, but Kona is "Ono" - tastes good! Where there's coffee, there's caffeine, and where there's caffeine, there's opportunity to do stupid things faster. That's where teachable moments are - ignorance is bliss in paradise.
🌋 Kilauea Midnight Steam-By

Overnight sailing past active Kilauea - lava rivers sparking and spilling into the sea with moon-lit backdrop. Molten rock at water's edge creating once-in-a-lifetime views. The Big Island terrain like the moon with razor-sharp geo-volcanic rock that destroys bike tires instantly.
🌈 Rainbow Falls & Banyan Tree Hugs

Hilo is artistically bohemian and the real deal - papayas, homemade jams, roasted macadamia nuts, koa wood carvings. Banyan trees worthy of hugs that moved me to tears of joy (for real). Biked to Rainbow Falls where the nature, land, and people speak - it's easy to listen.
🌊 Blue Hawaii Revelation

Kona's ocean water reflects blue Hawaii that leaves me wondering where the ukulele and Elvis sightings are. Lono's breeze whispers cool like Captain Cook's spirit saying: "Well done, you found this place. Now don't get yourself killed like me for being a stupid Haole." This is a state of grace, not just a state of mind.

Core Concept: Attention is the true active ingredient.
45-Second Rule: For the first 45 seconds of your next coffee, do nothing else. No phone. No planning. Notice the aroma, temperature, taste, place, and person beside you.
Workbook Prompt: Write about one ordinary ritual that became meaningful because of where you were and who shared it with you.
